DIY Hair Oils for Better Hair Care

Hair oils play an important part in our hair care routine. Oiling improves hair health. The goodness of oiling is abundant.

Nowadays both genders are equally experiencing several hair problems like hair fall, dandruff, split ends, etc. Everyone desire to attain shimmering, attractive, thick, and wholesome tresses. However, it seems like a dream to achieve healthy and problem-free crowning glory.

Why use hair oils

For a majority of us despite trying various hair care products, the result doesn’t seem satisfactory. It may be due to the presence of chemicals in those products which have damaged the locks profusely.

Whether you are battling with hair fall or are trying hard to encourage hair thickening. Oiling takes care of all concerns by providing appropriate nutrients to the scalp. It makes locks healthier and tangle-free. 

We recognize the advantages of oiling but what about the oil which an individual should use? Hair oils acquired from a store will be loaded with unknown preservatives, fragrances, and chemicals. Is it sensible to hand over the precious tresses in the hand of market products?

You can make your oils at home with the traditional methods and natural ingredients from your kitchen. Do you think preparing hair oils at home is a big task? Combining some components will give you an environment-friendly and concrete oil. That will be harmless to the skin and will be loaded with multiple properties.

Let us progress towards the recipes of developing different kinds of oils with diverse benefits. Believe me, preparing these oils is not a time-consuming job. An iron pan is a vital utensil for cooking the hair oils to get the maximum benefits of the hair oils.

Recipes

The instructions for developing these oils are as under

Amla Hair Oil (Indian Gooseberry)

There are two methods of preparing this oil. One with fresh gooseberries and the second with dry gooseberry powder.

1- Fresh Amla Oil

Take fresh amla. Rinse it and dry it using a cloth. (If possible you can sundry it)

Ingredients

  • Amla fruit
  • Coconut oil 
  • Sesame oil 

Method

  1. Grate the fruit.
  2. Squeeze out the juice.
  3. The juice should measure 250 ml.
  4. Take an iron pan and add the two oils with amla juice and cook on slow fire. 
  5. You can cover the pan with a lid or can half cover it.
  6. Close the gas once the simmering sound of boiling water stops coming.
  7. Once all the water has evaporated let it cool.
  8. Strain it with a double-layer cloth.
  9. You can use a muslin or cotton cloth.
  10. Store in a glass bottle.

Usage

Before bedtime massage this oil on your scalp.

Within two to three months your hair health will improve.

Important tips

You can either combine both the oils or during the summer season blend the juice with coconut oil. People residing in hot places should opt for coconut oil.

Sesame oil is for winter use or for those who reside in a cold place.

The proportion will be

During winter – 250 ml Amla juice + 250 ml sesame oil.

During summer – 250 ml Amla juice + 250 ml coconut oil.

For all time usage – 250 ml Amla juice + 125 ml sesame oil + 125 ml coconut oil.

2- Dry Amla Powder Oil

Ingredients 

  • 125 gms – Amla powder
  • 500 ml – water
  • 250 ml – coconut oil or 250 ml sesame oil

The procedure of preparing amla liquid

  1. Soak amla powder in 500 ml water. Leave it for a night or ten to fifteen hours.
  2. Boil the amla water solution on a low flame. Cook it until the water reduces to half of the original quantity. (250ml)
  3. In this water, add the carrier oil of your choice, and cook it in the same way. (fresh amla oil)
Ayurvedic hair oil

Ingredients

  • Four tbsp – Fenugreek seeds (crushed)
  • Four tbsp – Black cumin seeds (crushed)
  • Seven to eight – cloves
  • A handful of – curry leaves
  • A handful of – mint leaves
  • Four cups – Either mustard oil or coconut oil

Method

Pour all the ingredients together in an iron pan with the oil and start cooking on low heat for twenty minutes.

The magical oil is ready.

Four Component hair regrowth hair oils 

Ingredients

  • One coffee mug – Mustard oil
  • Take One tbsp – Fenugreek seeds
  • One tbsp – Nigella seeds
  • One tbsp – Dry curry leaves

Method

  1. Heat the oil in an iron pan and leave it for five minutes.
  2. Add the seeds to the oil and continue cooking for another four minutes.
  3. Switch off the flame and combine curry leaves.
  4. Once the oil cools, pour the oil with the components in a glass bottle.
  5. Place this bottle in the sun for five days. 

(If there is no sunlight available then heat this oil in the microwave for ten seconds each day, for five days)

Application

  1. Apply this oil for two to three hours and shampoo your locks.
  2. Use it on alternate days if you have dandruff.
  3. Twice a week is enough to control hair fall.
  4. Weekly usage is advisable for oily scalp.
  5. It is strong oil. Use it for two to three months, and then give a break of a month. 
Curry leaves oil

Ingredients

  • A handful of – curry leaves
  • Half cup – coconut oil

Method

  1. Grind the curry leaves into a paste.
  2. Mix it with the oil and cook on a slow fire for five minutes.
  3. Turn off the flame.
  4. Let it cool.
  5. Strain and store.
Onion hair oil

Ingredients

  • 250ml – coconut oil
  • 150 ml – castor oil
  • One tbsp – onion seeds
  • One tbsp – fenugreek seeds
  • Twenty – small onions (chopped)
  • A handful of – curry leaves

Method

  1. Dry roast the seeds and grind them to a powder.
  2. In an iron pan pour both the oils and place the pan on flame. Allow it to heat.
  3. Add seed powders.
  4. Put in the small onions (chopped) once the oil starts to boil. Partially cook the onions.
  5. Add curry leaves to the solution.
  6. Leave this oil on a slow flame until the onion turns brown. It will take twenty to twenty-five minutes.
  7. You will get a rustling sound.
  8. Turn off the flame. Allow it to cool.
  9. Strain through a cloth.
  10. This oil stays for three months.
Aloe vera hair oil

Ingredients

  • Half bowl – aloe vera gel (fresh pulp churned in a mixer jar)
  • Half bowl – coconut oil
  • One tbsp – black peppercorns

Method

  1. Heat all the three ingredients together in an iron pan on a slow fire.
  2. Cook until the components turn dark in color.
  3. When done, strain through a muslin or cotton cloth.
  4. Store in a glass bottle.

Application

  1. Apply it thrice a week.
  2. Try to keep it overnight for better results.
  3. You can use this oil on your skin for moisturization.
  4. It also cures crack heels.
Garlic Onion Oil

Ingredients

  • Half cup – peeled garlic
  • A handful of – curry leaves
  • Two big – onions
  • 200 ml – mustard oil
  • 100 ml – coconut oil
  • 50 ml – castor oil
  • Three – Vitamin E capsules

Method

  1. Grind onions with two to three tbsp mustard oil.
  2. In the same mixture, add garlic and churn again.
  3. Finally, add curry leaves and blend them for the third time.
  4. Heat a heavy-bottomed iron pan and slowly pour in the three oils and the ground paste.
  5. Simmer the flame and cook for a minimum of twenty-five minutes or until the components turn black.
  6. Let it cool. Strain it with a muslin cloth.
  7. Store in a dry place.

Application

Apply this oil twice a week and keep it overnight. The residue can be used as a hair pack. Just add fuller earth to the and, it turns into a beneficial hair pack. 

 Neem Oil 

(To treat lice and dandruff. These hair oils are suitable for children)

Ingredients

  • One cup – fresh neem leaves
  • One cup – fresh basil leaves
  • 200 ml – coconut oil

Method

  1. Grind the leaves.
  2. Mix them in the oil and cook in a heavy-based iron pan.
  3. Continue to cook on a low flame until the element burns or changes its color.
  4. Cover this prepared oil with a lid and leave it overnight.
  5. The next day strain and store it in a dry, moisture-free glass bottle.
  6. Add a dash of camphor to this oil to control excessive lice.
Hibiscus oil (controls dandruff)

Ingredients

  • Fifteen – hibiscus flowers
  • Virgin coconut oil – as per requirement

Method

  1. Separate the petals and spread them in a layer on a plate.
  2. Sundry them for a day or two.
  3. You can keep them for few hours daily in hot summers.
  4. The water content should evaporate, and the petals turn dry.
  5. Take them out into a bowl.
  6. Pour virgin coconut oil on top till the petals are immersed in it.
  7. Sundry again till oil gets heated up.
  8. The color of the oil should change.
  9. Strain and store.
Hibiscus curry leaves oil (Hair thickening)
  • 200 ml – coconut oil
  • Ten – hibiscus flowers
  • One cup – curry leaves
  • One tbsp – fenugreek seeds.

Method

  • Make a paste of the flowers and curry leaves (without water).
  • In an iron pan cook this mixture with coconut oil on a slow flame until the ingredients turn dark in color.
  • Leave it overnight.
  • Next day strain and store.

Few important data about hair oils

1-You can use any ingredients like moringa leaves or avocado peels and seeds to make your DIY oil at home. The selection of carrier oil depends on your preference. The commonly used oils are coconut oil, sesame oil, Mustard oil, etc.

2- You can unquestionably add a dash of any essential oil to enhance the fragrance.

3- Prepare these oils in an iron pan. In case of unavailability of an iron pan always prefer a heavy bottom pan.

4- While preparing onion oil, it is advised to make little at a time. In this way, the oil is more effective.

5- While grinding the ingredients, make sure there is no water added. If needed, you can add a few teaspoons fulls of oil to simplify the process.

6- After the oil is ready and cool, try not to strain it immediately. It is better to leave the prepared oil overnight and strain the next day.

7- In case fresh ingredients are unavailable, then always use the powdered form.

8- Store the oils in dry, moisture-free glass jars.

9- Do not overheat the concoction while cooking. The preparation should happen on a very slow flame.

10- Cover a lid when cooking the oils. You can half cover them too.

11- Try oiling at least twice a week to get positive results. You can leave the oil overnight.

12- Remember, be patient. These natural components take time to show effects. The outcome will be visible after some time.

13- Utilize a particular oil at a time and for at least three months. Do not combine different categories.

Now let us understand the advantages of few components used while cooking.

Benefits

Onions – Onions are high in sulfur and used as a remedy for alopecia. It treats scalp infection and contains vitamins and minerals. It doubles the density of the hair.

Amla – reduces hair loss, early greying, and hair destruction. It reduces stress and encourages hair growth.

Fenugreek seeds – Kills the bacteria and fungi present on the scalp. It stimulates hair follicles and improves hair growth.

It contains folic acid, Vitamin K, and Vitamin C. Zinc, phosphorus, and Iron.

Black cumin /nigella seeds –  Bursting with powerful properties. The beneficial elements available in these seeds strengthen hair follicles and increases hair growth.

Cloves – Increases blood circulation and reduces hair fall. Cloves promote hair growth.

Curry leaves – A rich source of Beta carotene and proteins. Reduces hair loss and increases hair growth. Adds shimmer to the hair. It contains phosphorus, Vitamin C, and phosphorus.

 Mint – Richest source of carotene and antioxidants.

Black pepper – Treats fungus and has anti-bacterial properties.

Aloe vera – stabilizes the pH level and takes care of dandruff. 

It moisturizes the dry scalp. Aloe vera stimulates weak strands.

Neem leaves – Antifungal and anti-bacterial features.

Basil leaves – Anti-fungal characteristics.

Hibiscus – Improves density as well as the fullness of the hair.
