Homemade hair dye and oils are not an old concept for us. In the early days, it was prevalent in rural and even in urban lifestyles but the ingredients and possibly their taxonomy is different. Ridge gourd Oil

Ridge gourd Oil is a time-tested remedy to reverse grey hair. 

The first ingredient is whole ridge gourd. Wash the vegetable and dry out the water properly. Cut it into small pieces with the skin. Let them dry in the shade for at least five days. You can keep it near a window with ample sunlight, or else it may develop fungus. There should be no moisture. Take care that the vegetable is completely moisture-free. You can keep it for added two more days for drying thoroughly.

Take a glass bottle and fill it up with the dried pieces. Top it up with Virgin coconut oil till the dried ridge gourds are submerged. Let the vegetable remain soaked in this oil for two days.

After two days, pour the entire content of this bottle into a pan. Cook it on a low flame for fifteen minutes or until the oil changes its color. The oil is now ready to be used.

Filter and store the oil at room temperature. The oil stays good for two to three months.

How to use this oil?

Massage this oil at least two to three times a week. You can leave the oil overnight and shampoo the next day. 

Precaution

Do not apply or treat your hair with henna, indigo powder, or dye. The oil becomes more effective.

Who will get the maximum benefit from this oil?

The oil works best for those who are in their mid or late twenty’s. It reverses grey hairs for those who have only a few strands of grey strands.

After three to five months of the utilization of this oil, visible results can be – observed. Be patient and apply it regularly.

Coconut shell hair dye

You will need just two ingredients to make this dye.

  • Coconut shell powder – two tsp
  • Aloe vera gel – one tsp.
Coconut shell powder recipe

Hold the coconut shell with a tong over a fire. 

Flip according to need.

Continue this process until it gets burnt completely or is turned black.

Let it cool. Grind it finely.

Process of forming a dye from this powder
  • Aloe vera gel – one tsp.
  • Take two tsp of coconut shell powder.
  • Add one tsp of aloe vera gel to it.
  • Mix well.

How to apply?

Apply this paste on grey strands.

Leave it for twenty to thirty minutes.

Coconut Coir/fiber Dye
  • You will need the fiber of one coconut. Ensure you use completely dried coir
  • One to two tablespoon mustard oil
  • Iron pan
Method
  • Put the coir in an iron pan and roast it on a slow flame.
  • Stir continuously. Cook until the fiber turns black.
  • Transfer the burnt coconut coir to a plate. Grind it to a fine powder.
  • Add one to two tbsp of mustard oil to this powder to make a smooth paste. Your dye is ready to be used.
  • You can make this powder in a lump sum amount and store it in a jar for later use.
How to apply it?

Use gloves while applying it.

  1. Cover your greys with cotton.
  2. You can spread the paste all over your scalp and hair.
  3. Leave it for an hour.
  4. Rinse off with plain water. Then you can Shampoo.
Turmeric Hair Dye

Things needed for cooking turmeric tea.

  • One glass water
  • Two tsp tea leaves
  • One tsp turmeric powder
Method
  • Prepare tea with one glass of water with two tsp tea leaves.
  • After one boil, reduce the flame. Let it be for a few more minutes.
  • Now add one tsp turmeric powder to this tea.
  • Cook till water reduces to half the quantity.
  • Turn off the flame. Turmeric tea is ready.
Ingredients required to add to this tea are as follows
  • Two tsp coffee powder
  • Two tsp Amla powder (Indian Gooseberry)
  • Two tsp mild shampoo
Procedure
  • In the hot turmeric tea, add coffee powder and amla powder. Cover the lid and let it be for five minutes.
  • Strain the solution.
  • Divide this tea into two equal portions.
  • Add two tsp shampoo to one portion of the tea.
  • Massage this tea all over your scalp and hair.
  • Leave ii for five minutes. Rinse with plain water.
Components to be combined in the second portion of the tea are as under
  • Two tsp Castor oil
  • Two tsp Mustard oil
Method
  1. Mix the ingredients to the second half of the tea.
  2. Mix thoroughly.
  3. Apply it all over your scalp and massage for five minutes.
  4. Keep it overnight.
  5. The next day wash your hair using a mild shampoo.
  6. Use turmeric dye twice a week for a noticeable outcome.
Lemon Dye

Things required are

  • Two big lemons
  • Two tsp amla powder (Indian gooseberry)
Method
  1. Mix the two components properly. There should be no lumps.
  2. Apply this mixture to your scalp and hair.
  3. Leave it for two hours.
  4. Rinse with plain water.
  5. You can utilize shampoo the next day.

Onion peels natural hair dye.

Ingredients

Onions peels of half kilo onions.

Aloe vera gel – as per need

Method
  1. In an iron pan, burn the onion peels until they turn black.
  2. Do it on a slow flame.
  3. When done, turn off the flame and wait until the peels cool down.
  4. Crush them with your hands or in a grinder.
  5. Sieve the powder.
  6. Add the required amount of aloe vera gel to the powder. The powder should turn into a thin paste.
  7. Instead of aloe vera gel, you can also use coconut oil or amla (gooseberry) oil.
  8. Apply this paste to your scalp and hair.
  9. Leave it for an hour. 
  10. Wash it off with plain water.

Garlic Skin Hair Dye

There is no specific measurement for this recipe

  1. Take garlic cloves and collect the skin of it.
  2. Dry roast the peels in an iron pan (on a slow flame) until they become tar-black.
  3. Switch off the gas. Let it cool.
  4. Grind the burnt peels to a fine powder.
  5. Make a paste of this powder with the help of olive oil or coconut oil.
  6. Store this mixture in a bottle for about seven days.
  7. Apply this mixture to your hair (after seven days).
  8. Leave it for two hours.
  9. Wash off with shampoo.

Coffee Hair Dye

Using coffee is a natural way to cover your grey hair. You can utilize this dye to get a nice warm brown color.

Ingredients
  • Two tbsp – hair conditioner
  • One tbsp – instant coffee powder
  • One tsp – freshly brewed coffee
  • One tsp – cacao powder (Use this powder if you wish to add a little bit more color)
Method
  1. Add one tbsp instant coffee powder to the conditioner.
  2. Pour in the cacao powder and the coffee brew.
  3. Mix them thoroughly.
  4. Apply this concoction to your hair and put on your shower cap.
  5. You need to leave this mixture on your hair for an hour.
  6. If you are doing this for the first time, you may have to use this two days in a row to get a good result.
Last rinse tip
  • Always rinse out the color with apple cider vinegar (with the mother). 
  • Mix one tbsp apple cider vinegar to one cup of water. 
  • Use this as your last rinse.

This coffee dye is natural. It covers your greys and gives them a nice warm brown color. 

Cocao powder is an unprocessed form of cocoa powder.

It is very rich in nutrients and strengthens hair follicles.

Onion seeds, Fenugreek seeds, and Indian gooseberry hair dye

Ingredients
  • Two tbsp – dried gooseberry 
  • Two tbsp – fenugreek seeds
  • Two tbsp – fenugreek seeds
  • Two tbsp – onion seeds
  • Two tbsp – aloe vera gel
Method
  1. In an iron pan, roast each ingredient individually for a few minutes and keep aside. Let them cool.
  2. Grind them separately to a fine powder.
  3. Pour one and a half glasses of water into an iron pan.
  4. Add two tbsp each of all three powders to this water and mix well. There should be no lumps.
  5. Turn on the flame and cook the mixture for ten to fifteen minutes.
  6. Leave this blend in the same iron pan overnight.
  7. The next day, add two tbsp of aloe vera gel to this batter.
  8. Mix well and apply this concoction all over your hair.
  9. Leave it for two hours.
  10. Wash off with plain water.
  11. Oil your hair on the same night with good herbal oil.
  12. Shampoo your locks the next day.

Beetroot Hair Dye

Ingredients
  • Two to three – Beetroot (The quantity depends on the length of the hair)
  • Half cup – Honey (optional)
  • Heena powder – as required
Method
  1. Heena powder – as required
  2. Grate the beetroot and extract the juice.
  3. Add half a cup of honey(optional) to this juice.
  4. Combine henna powder with the above liquid. The quantity of henna powder should be sufficient to transform the liquid into a dropping consistency paste.
  5. Apply this mixture onto your tresses and wear a shower cap.
  6. Leave it for two hours.
  7. You can shampoo and condition your hair after rinsing off the dye.
  8. Use it three to four times a month.

Beetroot Catechu Hair Dye

Ingredients
  • Two to three – Beetroot (The quantity depends on the length of the hair)
  • Two inches piece of – Catechu/kattha
  • Two tbsp – Cornflour
  • Soak catechu/kattha in little water. Keep it overnight. Catechu makes the dye color dark and long-lasting.
Method
  1. Grate and Extricate the juice from the beetroot. The measured amount of juice is approximately 350 ml.
  2. Strain the juice.
  3. Cook the beetroot juice on a slow flame.
  4. Put in the soaked catechu/kattha (with the water) and cornflour to the extract.
  5. Stir continuously until the solution thickens. It will take approximately five minutes.
  6. Check the thickness. If the need arises then additional cornflour can be combined to boost the density of the solution.
  7. Switch off the flame and leave it aside for at least one hour.
  8. Comb your locks and cover them with the prepared batter.
  9. Put on your shower cap.
  10. Leave it for a minimum of one hour.
  11. Wash it off with plain water.
  12. Shampoo your hair the following day of the application.
  13. Color will be noticeable on dry hair.
  14. Utilize it once a week.

Beetroot Coffee Hair Dye (Highlighter)

Ingredients
  • Two to three – Beetroot (The quantity depends on the length of the hair)
  • One and a half glasses of – water
  • Two tsp – coffee powder
  • Henna powder – as per the length of the hair.
Method
  1. Pour water into a pan and add the grated beetroot into it and cook it on slow flame.
  2. After one boil, put in the coffee powder.
  3. Cook until the water reduces to half the quantity.
  4. Strain this solution. Let it cool.
  5. In a separate bowl, take out the required amount of henna powder.
  6. Soak this powder with beetroot coffee infusion.
  7. Leave it overnight.
  8. The paste should be sufficiently dense to be appropriately applied.
  9. Utilize this mixture to lightly oiled hair.
  10. You can either apply this dye all over your scalp and hair or else just on the areas in which you want to give a highlighted effect.
  11. Let it stay on your crowning glory for a least one hour. 
  12. You can shampoo after rinsing the dye.

Heena Indigo Hair Dye

Ingredients
  • Two tbsp – henna powder
  • One tbsp – indigo powder
  • One tbsp – Amla (Indian gooseberry) powder
  • One tbsp – hibiscus powder
  • One tbsp – curry leaves powder
  • Two tbsp – curd
  • As per need – water
Method
  1. Mix all the dry powders. You can make a big batch of the powders (with the same proportion) and store them for later use.
  2. Add curd and water to the powders to make a batter consistency.
  3. Let it rest for overnight or two to three hours.
  4. Apply the mixture to your hair.
  5. Leave it for two hours.
  6. Wash off with plain water (no shampoo).

Follow up

The next day oil your hair and leave it overnight.

Follow up with a shampoo the following day.

How long to use?

For the first month you have to use it once a week.

The second-month application of twice a month will be sufficient.

Finally, in the third month, an alternate week utilization is advisable.

Precautions

  • Ensure not to use any other remedy while following this application.
  • Say no to any chemical-based products.
  • Be consistent and go slow. Your patience and regularity will produce concrete results.
  • Use DIY shampoos.
  • Always go for DIY conditioners.
